I met Madison at a friend’s engagement party in Los Angeles in 2015. Our conversation was only a few minutes long, but her words stuck with me and I have often found myself thinking about what she said that evening. If you’ve ever met Madison, then you undoubtedly know what I mean when I say she is hard to forget.
Madison speaks with conviction and enthusiasm, and radiates an authentic joy that is contagious. She is not only gorgeous, but also has a depth and genuineness that draws you in. It was evident from our exchange that she was passionate about making music because she believed the Lord was calling her to use her voice to magnify Him and speak (or sing) life into others. I can still hear the way she matter-of-factly stated with absolute confidence (and with the most endearing southern drawl), “I know what I was made to do.”
These eight words haven’t left me. The most captivating and magnetic thing about a person is her confidence in Christ and certainty of her purpose. Since our meeting, Madison has continued to do exactly what she set out to do. She has reached the top 14 on the iTunes pop charts with her original music, competed on America’s Got Talent, and started a non-profit called the Glow Movement that allows her to inspire kids to pursue their dreams.
Without further ado, meet the one and only Madison Watkins. May her passion and faith in Jesus encourage you today just as much as her words that evening continue to encourage me, and may her music make you dance like no one is watching!
You Are Loved,
UNPRECEDENTED: Madison, I am a big fan of your music and LOVE your voice! When did you first realize that you wanted to pursue music as a career?
MADISON: Thank you! I knew I wanted to sing when I was twelve years old. I actually did a solo in my church musical and after singing my part I got a standing ovation from the audience. That feeling of making an impact on people’s hearts and the fact that they actually stood to their feet showed me that this career was going to be something I did for the rest of my life.
UNPRECEDENTED: You are a Christian and an artist. How does your faith in Jesus influence your music and help guide your career decisions?
MADISON: As a believer who doesn’t sing Christian music, it is pretty interesting. My faith in Christ influences every decision of my life, but most of the time people don’t know why my life looks different than most artists. It is so cool that I get to have a spirit in my heart that allows me to love on others and make every decision based on what I think is going to glorify God the most. So to answer your question… my relationship with him guides every choice in my career.
UNPRECEDENTED: You have a ridiculously fun presence on social media and are really intentional about connecting with your fans. Tell me more about the Glow Movement and why it is important for you to share your time and voice with young people.
MADISON: I love to allow people of all ages to see that life is real; that I don’t have it all together, but that is the part that makes life fun. You have to just roll with it sometimes. Along with that, I use my non-profit called the Glow Movement to show kids that their value doesn’t come from what others say about them. I want to be a role model that shows kids that life isn’t about looking perfect on Instagram, but that each one of us has been given gifts that we are supposed to use to impact the world.
UNPRECEDENTED: You are making such a positive impact on others and inspiring the next generation of singers. Who are your biggest musical influences right now?
MADISON: There are so many influences in my career right now. I love Bruno Mars, Alessia Cara, Zara Larson…the list goes on. One thing they have in common is that they all have songs that are so much fun. I love songs that make me want to dance wherever I am.
UNPRECEDENTED: I would love to hear a little bit more about your story of faith. How did you first come to know the Lord?
MADISON: I grew up in an incredible family. I have the best parents who have showed me what a walk with Christ really looks like. I committed my life to Christ at a young age,
but through almost losing my parents in different health issues/accidents they experienced through my life, I really started to see that my personal relationship with Christ is so important. I want people to see that I am not perfect. I have sin that I hate and that I work through every day, but I have a hope that allows me to see past that. I want to use every ounce of the gifts that God has given me to bring people closer to him. That is why I am in the industry in the first place: That in every eye that sees me…Christ be all around me.
UNPRECEDENTED: What is your favorite Bible verse right now?
MADISON: “And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him. And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for.” – 1 John 5:14-15
